DISCRIPTION
⚓ Galvanic Isolator – Waterproof 64A Model
🔧 Function
The galvanic isolator prevents electrolytic corrosion by blocking low-voltage DC currents that may enter your boat through the shore power earth wire. These unwanted currents can cause corrosion to underwater metal components, such as the hull, propeller, and shaft.
⚙️ Working Principle
The galvanic isolator consists internally of two diodes connected in anti-parallel configuration. In this arrangement:
-
The diodes block low-voltage DC currents—specifically those below the 1.4 VDC threshold (typical for galvanic potentials between dissimilar metals).
-
Above 1.4 VDC, the diodes begin to conduct in either direction, allowing higher fault or error voltages to pass through.
This ensures:
-
Normal galvanic voltages are blocked, protecting underwater metals from corrosion.
-
In the event of a fault voltage, current can still flow, ensuring that the residual-current device (RCD) activates to maintain safety.
The isolator is installed directly behind your boat's 230V AC shore power connection.
